Navigating the Future of Biocides:
Insights from the 13th BPR Symposium

Over 60 attendees convened at the Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel for the 13th annual ARCHE Consulting BPR Symposium. We were delighted to welcome industry partners, legal experts, laboratories, and consultancies for an engaging discussion on the challenges and opportunities shaping the biocides industry.

The symposium featured a diverse range of expert-led sessions. The day began with ‘Dossier Development,’ chaired by Frederik Verdonck (ARCHE Consulting). This session explored key topics, including navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, insights from biocide dossiers, ED testing for biocides, and hands-on experience in efficacy testing for PT11.

The ‘Regulatory Updates’ session, moderated by Koen Van Maldegem (Fieldfisher Belgium), provided in-depth presentations on BPR regulatory changes and challenges. Experts shared updates on EU and GB BPR legal trends and offered a critical perspective on the uncontrolled loss of active substances.

Esteemed speakers included Anna Fracskowska (Colgate), Ellen Van Belle and Lieve Claeys (ARCHE Consulting), Sofia Sola Sancho (Charles River), Tobias Strauß (Hygcen Germany), Erik van de Plassche, Cindy Van der Meer (Ctgb), Maud Grunchard and Koen Van Maldegem (Fieldfisher), and Jules Bossert (Biocides for Europe). Each speaker contributed valuable insights, fostering dynamic discussions and interactive exchanges with the audience.

The event underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing regulatory shifts and industry challenges. We look forward to continuing these vital conversations in the future!

Key messages from the symposium emphasized the dynamic regulatory environment:

  • The ever-evolving regulatory landscape presents ongoing challenges, requiring vigilance from all stakeholders. Our latest session covered key updates, including new guidance and test-protocol adaptations, with practical tips to enhance authorization success.
  • Attendees gained valuable hands-on experience in efficacy testing for PT11 and explored the latest developments in endocrine disruption (ED) testing for biocides.
  • Discussions covered major regulatory shifts, such as the extension of the Review Program, new hazard classifications under CLP, and anticipated changes to critical procedures—including SBP, renewals, and modifications—alongside updates on the BPR refit.
  • The implications of the hard stop of data protection were addressed, along with concerns surrounding PFAS.
  • A fresh perspective was shared on the various pathways leading to the uncontrolled loss of active substances, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.

The 13th BPR Symposium provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to connect and explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the biocides industry. As the sector navigates an increasingly complex and evolving regulatory landscape, the event fostered collaboration and strategic discussions, laying the groundwork for continued progress.
