Introduction to Ecotoxicology and Environmental Risk Assessment

May 22-23, 2025

Learn the fundamentals of ecotoxicology and its role in assessing the environmental impact of hazardous substances. This introductory course covers ecotoxicological terminology, testing methods, the concepts of hazard and risk assessment, and the relevant regulatory framework.

A large number of hazardous substances are released into the environment, making it crucial to assess their impact on ecosystems. As part of regulatory compliance, registrants are required to collect ecotoxicological data. Additionally, extended safety data sheets (eSDS) for hazardous substances must include specific exposure scenarios.

Understanding ecotoxicology, its key concepts, and the right methods for summarising relevant information is essential. This course will introduce you to ecotoxicological terminology, concepts, and testing methods. You will gain valuable insights into the principles of hazard and risk assessment, along with the various exposure models used in the risk assessment of chemicals and their environmental impact. You will also learn about the regulatory framework and relevant legislation.

This cross-sector training course has been set up as a first introduction and does not require prior knowledge in ecotoxicology. However, a basic understanding of chemistry and/or biology is recommended for participants.
